MTN Uganda has announced Friday that it will disconnect telephone numbers that are not yet verified, following a recent directive by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), ordering all the telecom companies to verify the identities of their subscribers who have multiple Sim cards.
UCC says the verification exercise is aimed at ensuring that the National Identification Numbers (NINs) match with the ownership of the Sim cards.
In a Friday statement, MTN Uganda said the unverified numbers will be disconnected on May 1.
“Verify your SIM card today,” reads the statement in part. “Please note that all numbers registered under your NIN will be disconnected if you don’t verify them by Wednesday, 1 May 2019.”
How to verify your numbers
According to the statement, to verify your numbers, you’ll dial *197# and select option 4 to confirm numbers registered against your NIN.
To confirm all unverified numbers against your NIN, you will select option 1.
When you select Option 2, you’ll remove numbers registered against your NIN one by one.
When you choose option 3, you’ll be able to add back numbers you might have removed accidentally.

Details not captured
MTN Uganda says that “if your identification details were not captured, please visit any MTN Service Centre or Dduuka to verify all numbers registered against your NIN.”
Important to note: The numbers you remove from your NIN, the Friday statement reads, “will be barred immediately and KYC details deleted.”
And those that you allow will take on the name on the National ID, adds the statement.
To see all numbers registered against your NIN, you’ll dial *197#, select option 2 and enter your NIN.
