Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) is set to host a global hackathon, in which participants will be required to develop innovations that can help in improving community health services to attain universal health coverage.
Dubbed CAMTech Uganda Medtech Hackathon, the global competition is held annually and this will be the sixth time, the first time being in 2013.
CAMTech is short for The Consortium for Affordable Medical Technologies, a global network of academic, clinical, corporate, government and non-profit partners, working together to drive health innovation around the world.
Based at Massachusetts General Hospital Global Health, on its website, CAMTech says it identifies pressing clinical needs from the field, crowdsources innovative solutions, and accelerates the cycle from idea to patient impact. It has its main branches in Uganda and India and networks across various countries in the world.

The Medtech Hackathon will be held at MUST from August 24-26, 2018, and officials say it will bring together innovators from around the world to solve critical health challenges in low-resource settings.
“Teams will work during this 48-hour event to transform ideas into prototypes that have the potential to revolutionize health outcomes in Uganda and around the world,” reads a statement on the CAMTech website.

Prizes for winners are not indicated on the website; different prizes, mainly cash, have been offered over the years, and for last year the winning team bagged Shs2.5 million. The first, second and third runners-up were also rewarded.
Apart from the hackathon, CAMTech also has other projects, including innovation awards, accelerator programs and boot camps.
