UgaBus and SafeBoda, both startups committed to digitizing the transport sector in Uganda, have been included in the final shortlist for the 4th AppsAfrica.com Innovation Awards.

The finalists were announced on Wednesday.

According to officials, to come up with the finalists, they had to select from more than 300 submissions from 39 countries.

Seventy startups cruised to the final stage, with the highest numbers, not surprisingly, coming from Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana.

AppsAfrica innovations awards are supported by Uber, JET8¸ Syntonic and Mobile Monday South Africa (MOMO).

They, according to officials, “provide winners with industry recognition, global publicity, and networking with 300+ industry peers.”

The award ceremony will be held in Cape Town on November 12, 2018.

Category winners will also have an opportunity to attend the Africa Tech Summit Kigali 2019, which is expected to attract 400 plus tech leaders from across the continent.

Applications for the 14 categories were assessed and judged by an independent panel of industry experts including media, investors, and leaders from the tech ecosystem.

UgaBus and SafeBoda

UgaBus, an online bus ticketing portal, was nominated in the Mobility and Transport category alongside four other startups from South Africa (2), Rwanda and Cameroon.

With UgaBus, Ugandan travelers are able to book their bus tickets in advance of their trip anywhere in East Africa.

SafeBoda, a ride-hailing company, was nominated in the category of Best African App, which has other four startups from Nigeria and South Africa (3).

Launched in 2014, SafeBoda is the leading motorcycle taxi ride-hailing company in Uganda.
