Govt starts developing digital code to market Ugandan products

Uganda trade barcode

George Aine

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives in collaboration with UNBS has embarked on the process to develop a unique product identification code for Uganda – Barcode.

A barcode is an optical, machine-readable representation of data. It gives the corresponding description of an item including the company, country of origin and the relevant information about the product including product name, type and price.

The initiative will promote Uganda’s products in the regional and international markets as they will be easily identified and will also help to eliminate counterfeits.

This was agreed in during a quarterly Top Management meeting for the Ministry and its affiliate agencies.

Other issues discussed include improvement of grain storage, issues of plastic bags, improvement of tea value chain, the New AGOA strategy and so on.
