3 years ago, Netflix first introduced Smart Downloads, an offline-viewing feature that pulls in the next episode of your favorite shows. Just like its name, that was indeed smart. Now, in a bid to keep you more engaged, the streaming service is making available its content for you to watch even if disconnected.
This is with the launch of a feature, dubbed Downloads For You, that will automatically download TV shows or movies you might be interested in based on your preferences and viewing history, so you can watch them in offline mode.
The new Downloads For You feature is available on Netflix’s Android app globally, having tested it out with select users in late 2020. Netflix said it will test out Downloads For You on the iOS version of its app soon.
The company says not all content is available for download through this feature. But certainly most content in its catalog is available to be downloaded and watched offline. The exceptions coud likely be based on licensing rights.
How to enable Netflix Downloads For You
Netflix affirms that users have control of how much video is downloaded to their devices.
To enable the Downloads For You feature:
- Go to the Downloads tab on the app
- Switch on Downloads For You.
- Choose the amount of content you want to be downloaded to your device: 1 gigabyte, 3 GB or 5GB
- Click Turn On.
The more space you allow, the more recommendations Netflix will download for you.
