Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), a body that governs Kampala, has rolled out a new project dubbed Technology Innovations Competition, which will see students and graduates face off for cash.
According to KCCA’s website, the project is targeting innovators who can give working solutions to challenges faced by citizens and the government.
“These challenges will be in form of themes and participants will be required to find solutions based on the theme,” reads the website.
For this year, the theme is “citizen reporting” and the competitors, according to KCCA, will pitch solutions that will improve citizens’ reporting on services in their areas.

“There are a number of services offered by KCCA in the City which include; maintenance of roads, street lighting and waste management,” reads the website.
“It is important that citizens have a solution where they are able to report to KCCA on the status of such services in their areas so that they can be identified and resolved by the right officials in the shortest time possible.”
Terrific conditions
Competitors will have to observe some conditions before participating, but there is one which stood out: KCCA wants the developers to transfer ownership of their projects to the Authority after being given the cash prize.
“KCCA requires that upon award of these prizes the owners transfer to KCCA the entire right, title, and interest in and to said Innovation, and any patent and patent applications deriving therefrom for any such innovation,” says KCCA. “KCCA reserves the right to fully develop and use the innovations for which cash prizes have been given to the owners.”
The amount a winner will be given was not revealed, and we were not able to get a comment from KCCA. But this is a rare case in innovation competitions.
The are various other conditions that have been set, and you can find them on the KCCA website. Deadline for application will be July 20, 2018.
This is a good development, considering the previous government institution-supervised awards were phased out.
