Like we all enjoy using Facebook Messenger on our mobile devices and desktops, even the kids do. That is the reason for the existence of Messenger Kids, a video chat and messaging app designed for kids to communicate with family and close friends.
Messenger Kids features include the ability for parents to set up and manage their child’s Messenger Kids account through their own Facebook account; Parents supervising their kids’ friending; and parents using their own Messenger account to message and video chat with a child who’s using Messenger Kids.
Also, adult family and friends who are added as contacts to a Messenger Kids account connecting to the account through their own Messenger accounts.
Messenger Kids is now available in sub-Saharan Africa in the App Store for iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, the Amazon Appstore for Fire tablets, and the Google Play Store for all other Android devices.
The app is now available in all African countries.
How to create a Messenger Kids account for your child
To create an account for your child:
- Download the Messenger Kids app onto the device that your child uses. Open the app and tap Next.
- Tap Confirm.
- Enter your Facebook login information and tap Authorize Device.
- Enter your child’s name and tap Continue.
- Tap Create Account, then follow the on-screen instructions.
After you finish setting up your Messenger Kids account, these steps should be completed by your child:
- Tap Take a Photo.
- Choose a color to decorate the app and tap Continue.

Alternatively, if you are using a desktop, you should log into your Facebook account. From your News Feed, go to the section on the left side and click Messenger Kids. If you don’t see it, click See More… and scroll down to find it.
Below Accounts you manage, click Create Another Account. Type your child’s first and last name, click Continue, click Create Account, and then click Done.
