MTN Uganda this past Wednesday announced that it had restructured one of its special offers called Gaga Wednesday.
This comes after the company’s system suffered a glitch and the consumers of this package started paying less for the bundles, resulting in MTN collecting fewer funds than expected.
When the Gaga Wednesday pack was rolled out, customers would pay Shs4,000 to get 4GB of data bundles which would last for 24 hours.
The offer would, however, at times vary, with the telco, at times, offering 3GB at Shs3,500 or 2.5GB at Shs5,000 or 2GB at Shs4,000.
But, in the process, some consumers realized that if you activated autorenewal, the package would last forever as long as you always had a minimum of Shs250 in airtime to buy 15MBs.
So, most people who knew about this malfunction in the system started spending less for a lot of data.
When MTN eventually realized what was happening, it acted. In the days that followed, the bundles were dramatically reduced, with people getting 1.5GB for Shs4000 at one point. Remember, initially, one would get 4GB for Shs4000.
Complaints started piling on social media.
It seems MTN has finally ‘killed’ the bug. And on Wednesday, they repackaged the offer. For those who used it this past Wednesday, they got 1.5GB for Shs4,000 (remember, there is no standard offer. The offer could change next week.)

However, what MTN has done, this time round, they’ve extended the validity of Gaga Wednesday. It now lasts three days.
“Y’ello our esteemed customers, please be informed that moving forward, Gaga bundles will be valid for only 3 days, up to 6AM on Saturdays,” reads a statement from MTN Uganda.
“You won’t be able to extend the bundles using daily bundles or any other offer. This only applies to new Gaga bundles bought starting today.”

Important to note, Airtel offers 1GB at Shs5,000. Africell offers 2GB at Shs4,000. But it also varies from week to week; for instance, Africell has given 4GB at 4000 before.
Remember, the Gaga Wednesday bundles can be activated only by people using MyMTN App.
