Andela to unmask tech career scope at Kampala event

Clarke International University (Andela)

Andela Uganda, a community that brings together technologists, is organizing a forum dubbed “First Tech Sundowner Event,” where tech enthusiasts will be exposed to careers in software development.

The event will take place on June 22, 2018 at the Andela Offices in Kampala, according to an official post, and a registration platform has been provided.

This comes at a time when the ICT sector has proven to be a vibrant scene over the past years with several hubs being set up, Uganda hosting international technology events including the recent  African Blockchain conference and rise of programming communities such as Andela, Google Development Clubs among others.

This, however, has not fully addressed the challenges faced by the youth with a passion of pursuing careers in the ICT world. These challenges include limited opportunities due to local companies outsourcing ICT services from big multinational companies.

It is therefore not surprising that within such a fast-growing sector, tech youth professionals have too contributed to the 80% of unemployed youth in the country.

There has also been an observed brain-drain in the country and others have quit the sector to venture into other fields, claiming that they have failed to find opportunities in technology.

Running under the theme “Understanding careers in technology”, the event will expound on various career paths software developers can expect as they start off in the field.

Stephen Magero-Director of Success, Andela Uganda, who will lead the discussion on “The Past, Present, and Future of technology”, is among the speakers; he has been involved in managing software delivery projects and programs for last 16 years.

The topic on ‘preparation for a career path in technology’ will be led by Aireen Katongole, a recruitment manager at Andela; she holds 5 years of field experience in software development.

A programmer’s community, Andela was launched in Uganda in 2017, and it also has branches in Kenya (2015) and Nigeria (2014). It was started with an aim of developing the next generation of technology leaders who are in a position to solve challenges through application of technology.

To achieve this, Andela offers a wide range of other programs such as the Women in Tech program leadership that aims to support and empower women with a passion for technology and the Andela Level Up Program which offers free online courses to get one started in the area of Web Development technologies. All programs are free of charge.

In addition to this, Andela hires tech professionals to meet the ever-increasing demand of development teams in developed countries.
