Uganda will for the two days of May (23rd and 24th) host the first ever African Blockchain conference.
The event will be hosted at the plush Serena Hotel in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.
Organized under the theme, ‘the role of blockchain technology in Africa’s transformation’, the conference will be hosted by the Blockchain Association of Uganda with support from the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance.
The conference will be attended by policy makers, academia, entrepreneurs, Blockchain enthusiasts and leaders from the financial, health, industrial and other sectors.
Speaking recently a press conference to announce the summit, the Chairman of the Association, Kwame Rugunda said that the conference will give Ugandans in different sectors an opportunity to see how they can optimize the Blockchain technology to make service delivery better as well as understand different opportunities that exist with the new technology.
“Uganda needs to understand and appreciate the relevancy of the blockchain technology which is already being embraced by the whole world. This conference will be a big opportunity for the Uganda to advance this technology,” Rugunda said.
Blockchain technology is a distributed ledger platform that allows creation and management of decentralized systems and processes, which enhance efficiency and transparency of transactions across institutions or business operations.
Speaking at the same function, the Ministry of ICT Permanent Secretary, Vincent Bagiire Waiswa said that government of Uganda is ready to learn and engage in the new technology in order to advance its economic agenda.
“We are extremely delighted to participate in this new technology especially from the economic perspective of it. Technology in the whole world has been the most successful. Africa has not made a deliberate effort to occupy that space and we hope that this new technology will be the answer to this challenge,” Bagiire said.
He added that if embraced, the Blockchain technology could help Uganda and Africa to become a globalized economy that is able to export technology.
