New internet retailer opens shop in Rwanda

A new electronic commerce company StarMartz has set up shop in Rwanda, eyeing to cash in on the growing online payment space in the country.

StarMartz was launched on December 7 and it is managed by Shram Impex Ltd.

Rwandans can now buy from a vast collection of items on the company’s website and pay using credit cards, mobile money, and QR Code.

According to a March 17, 2018 report by Rwanda’s central bank, there were 1.5 million mobile money users in Rwanda in 2017, an increase of 18% compared to the previous year.

Items sold on StartMartz range from electronics to home appliances to garments, books among others.

The electronic commerce shop can currently be accessed via the web but the company told media that an application will be available starting December 13.
