SafeBoda among 2018 AppsAfrica award winners

Ride-hailing company SafeBoda was Monday night announced among the 2018 AppsAfrica award winners at an event held in Cape Town, South Africa.

Now in their fourth year, the AppsAfrica Awards celebrate startups that are contributing to the growth of the technology industry in Africa.

The winners are provided with industry recognition, global publicity, and networking opportunities, officials say.

The awards are supported by Uber, JET8¸ Syntonic and Mobile Monday South Africa (MOMO).

SafeBoda beat four startups from Nigeria (1) and South Africa (3) to become the Best African App.

UgaBus, an online bus ticketing portal, had been nominated in the Mobility and Transport category but it lost to Yego Innovision from Rwanda.

The 2018 AppsAfrica award winners will attend the Africa Tech Summit Kigali 2019.

“Having picked up an Award, this year’s winners are invited to Africa Tech Summit in Kigali, February 13th to 15th 2018, which connects over 400 corporates, mobile ventures, start-ups and investors from across Africa,” reads an official statement.

A total of 14 startups were selected from 300 submissions that were sent in from 39 African countries.

Best Blockchain Solution – Custos Media Technologies for Custos (South Africa)

Best IoT Solution – Hydrologistics Africa (Kenya)

Best Mobility Solution – Yego Innovision (Rwanda)

Best mCommerce Solution – Travelstart for Flapp (South Africa)

Changing Africa Award – Vanu, Inc (Rwanda)

Best EdTech Solution – Ever Africa for Xander Educational Apps (South Africa)

Best Enterprise Solution – Kobo360 (Nigeria)

Social Impact Award – WeThinkCode_ (South Africa)

Best African App – SafeBoda (Uganda)

Disruptive Innovation Award – NALA for NALA App (Tanzania)

Best Fintech Solution – Clickatell for WhatsApp Chat Banking (South Africa)

Best HealthTech Solution – Baobab Circle for Afya Pap (Kenya)
