WhatsApp starts rolling out the ‘Search the web’ feature

In this time when everyone is at home and a lot on their device, it is hard to contain the spread of fake news. So, in a bid to fight fake news and to promote verification of frequently forwarded messages, WhatsApp is now supporting the ability to search for more information on a message sent to you via the web.

The ‘Search the Web’ feature is a simple way to double check the messages received by tapping a magnifying glass button in the chat. According to WhatsApp, this will be of help to people who wish to find news results or other sources of information about content they have received.

This feature works by allowing users to upload the message via their browser. This is done without WhatsApp ever seeing the message itself.

The Search the web feature is being rolled out in Brazil, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, UK, and US for those on the latest versions of WhatsApp for Android, iOS and WhatsApp Web.
