National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has said it did not issue the statement that has been circulating online that they will be “instantly” replacing national identity cards (IDs) during the TaxPayers Appreciation Week.
Being organized by the Uganda Revenue Authority, the TaxPayers Appreciation Week will run from September 26-28 starting at 8am to 5pm at Kololo Airstrip daily.
A message that has been circulating on multiple social media platforms reads as follows:
“If there is anyone you know who lost his National ID and needs replacement, the Tax Payers’ Appreciation week starting on 26th September, 2018 at Kololo Airstrip is a golden opportunity. They target to issue such IDs instantly.”
However, in a Saturday statement, NIRA clarified that while they’ll be at the event like any other government agency, they won’t be issuing instant IDs to those who lost them.
The replacement process will stay as has always been.
“We would like to clarify that as a Government agency we shall participate in the Tax Payers Appreciation Week event just like last year and will offer the same services,” reads the statement.

“There will be free Registration of #NationalIDUg and the specified period when they will be ready shall be communicated to the applicants but they will not be instantly produced and issued out as this takes a process,” it adds.
“We shall also offer #NationalIDUgReplacement and the procedures shall not change. Dial *216# for the procedure.”
There's information being circulated online that: "If there is anyone you know who lost his National ID and needs replacement, the Tax Payers' Appreciation week starting on 26th September, 2018 at Kololo Airstrip is a golden opportunity. They target to issue such IDs instantly"

Currently, NIRA provides a USSD code, *216#, which you can dial on any network to request NIN, apply for ID, replace an ID and make corrections if the information on your ID isn’t right.
