The success of mobile money has driven most financial service providers into innovation for competitive purposes. Visa is one of those that have been drawn into finding ways of availing cash to customers through their phones.
When mobile money services happened, they made it easy to access cash through an agent next door. People ditched this idea of visiting ATMs to access their money and resorted to visiting agents that were more accessible. Following this, visa innovated around this mobile money technology to enable consumers to carry out transactions using their phone. And this will now be accepted as a payment method at one of East Africa’s popular coffee shops, Java House.
In a couple of days to come, according to officials, you will be able to pay for your favorite coffee by way of visa on your mobile.
Java House is setting up a system that will facilitate non-cash payment through your mobile phone with just a few clicks on your smartphone. This method is yet to be rolled out in every Java House point across the continent.
“We’ll continue to innovate & deliver excellence to our customers. We appreciate the key role that strategic partners like visa & banks play in this journey,” said John Mathenge, the group head of IT at Java house Africa, on LinkedIn.
Visa mobile payment is quick and easy to use. It is also convenient, secure and largely accepted in many places.
How to use visa mobile payment
For first time users, you will need to add your Visa Card to your payment-enabled mobile phone or device. This is however only acceptable if the financial institution that issued your Visa Card allows this.

After signing up, you can go ahead and visit a shop near you where visa mobile payments are accepted. Look for the Contactless Symbol on the terminal at the checkout point to initiate the payment.
All you need to do is hold your phone or device over the symbol to make your payment. It is as fast and as simple as that.
Each day that goes by, Africa moves closer to becoming a cashless continent. Aside from abandoning cash, cards, too, are slowly getting phased out. However, it is always safe to have all means of payment at your disposal. If you are a business person, this makes your products or services more accessible since everyone can pay through any means and, as a buyer, you will always have access to your funds wherever you go.
