BreastIT, a Ugandan healthcare startup is the winner of the Pistoia Alliance President’s Startup Challenge 2018.
BreastIT beat other four projects from Belgium, Switzerland, US, and Scotland to fetch Shs76 million at the prestigious innovation competition.
BreastIT is a combination of tools that use machine learning technology and ultrasound scanning to detect cancer in human beings.
The project is run by three innovators — Alvin Kabwama, Moris Atwine, and David Mwesigwa.
They met while students at Makerere University.

The competition occurred on Wednesday in Boston.
BreastIT faced off with Clarity Genomics from Belgium, Riffyn (US), UniteLabs (Switzerland) and UFraction8 (Scotland).
According to an earlier communiqué, the projects selected in this year’s competition had solutions covering Diagnostics for research, microbiome analysis, laboratory of the future and bioprocessing technology.
The competition seeks informatics and technology-focused startups aiming to impact the way life science research and development are performed.
The best two projects received the US $20,000 (Shs76m), and all the five will each get $5000 (about Shs19 million).
The best two will also receive 6 months of mentorship.
