Huawei has officially announced that its operating system for smartphones, HarmonyOS, will launch in April this year. And one thing we can be sure about is that the latest foldable phone, Mate X2 will be a part of the first batch to get the software via OTA software update.
Huawei has not yet unveiled the list of exiting devices that will get the HarmonyOS update but we shall surely detail them once this is available. The OS envisions enabling its users to establish a cross-device connection. Additionally, it promises a better user experience.
Launched at Huawei Developer Conference 2020, HarmonyOS 2.0 supports new device platforms including smartwatches, smart home devices, in-car systems as well as smartphones. According to the information, Huawei will launch a new smartphone pre-packed with HarmonyOS software.
Last December, Huawei started HarmonyOS 2.0 mobile beta testing for the developers and to give them an early look for ecosystem development. Initially, the Huawei P40, Mate 30, and MatePad Pro devices get a slot in the beta program that currently limited to the Chinese market. However, these could also be the first to upgrade on HarmonyOS.
Furthermore, the Chinese tech giant has planned to install HarmonyOS on up to 300 to 400 million units in 2021. These devices include both Huawei’s and third-party smart devices.
Recently, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer BG, said that if blocked by the U.S., Huawei can help other smartphone makers to also feature the company’s smartphone services including the new OS. This will eventually remove any dependence on Google Mobile Services (GMS).
Reliable information points out that the HarmonyOS kernel needs to be flexible to work with different chipsets and make it open source to use on other smartphones. Works to make this a possibility are ongoing.
