DStv unveils new Explora PVR decoder and streaming device

The parent company to DStv, MultiChoice Group, has unveiled two new devices to be launched soon! A new version of its Explora personal video recorder (PVR) decoder capable of delivering content in resolutions of up to 4K ultra high definition; and a streaming-only box.

The DStv Explora Ultra will let customers easily stream third-party content providers’ services in 4K resolution. These third-party providers are likely to include Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, though MultiChoice hasn’t immediately confirmed which partners it’s working with.

If you are the kind that is interested in an easy and simple way to enjoy content across many services, this is the ideal package for you.

The DStv Explora Ultra features

The new Explora Ultra includes Catch Up, BoxOffice and Showmax – features that were previously available to PVR users. Besides 4K, the decoder also supports Dolby Atmos as long as it is connected to the correct equipment. It also comes with a new remote control. The company itself isn’t offering any 4K content, but this may change in time.

If you wish to move from an existing Explora model, you won’t need to make any changes to your installation. You’ll just simply unplug the older Explora, then plug in the new model using the HDMI cable and power supply packaged with the decoder. A DStv smart LNB and an 80cm satellite dish will also be required.

It is not yet clear exactly when customers will be able to buy the Explora Ultra, but it should be available soon online and in retail outlets and through the company’s service centres and third-party installers.

A new DStv Streama device

It has also introduced a streaming-only box, called the DStv Streama. The Streama is an operator-tier platform, designed and built on top of the RDK platform by a collective of broadcasters (including Sky and Comcast).

RDK was selected because it allows MultiChoice to “deliver the best entertainment experience for our customers while enabling flexibility and security”. Accordingly, its secure environment protects content rights holders.

So, basically, you will need a DStv login, but no active subscription to use the DStv Streama. Then, you will be able to stream content from DStv, Showmax and YouTube as well as stream music via the Joox app, check the weather by using the People’s Weather app and check the latest fixtures, results and scores via the SuperSport app.

No launch date has been set yet for the DStv Streama device and its pricing is also not available yet.
